dc.description.abstractThis poster was presented at the American Geophysics Union 2018. Early warning systems are essential tools in the flood management cycle for saving lives and livelihoods. Whilst there are four recognized essential components of early warning systems – Risk Knowledge, Monitoring and Warning, Dissemination and Communication, and Response Capacity – most early warning systems only focus on the technological components (Monitoring and Warning). Practical Action, an international NGO, has extensive experience of developing people-centred early warning systems that reach the last mile, addressing all components of the early warning system. Here Practical Action shares examples, research findings, and lessons learned from community awareness raising and preparedness training, a range of technological monitoring approaches (from manual real-time river gauges to probabilistic flood level forecast models), examination of challenges and opportunities for communicating warnings to all community members (including a lens on marginalized groups), and capacity building for response. Their work bridges the physical and social sciences, and working towards technology justice for all. If we can tailor early warning systems to reach the last mile, including the most vulnerable and marginalised populations, we can improve the current systems, saving more lives and livelihoods of those at risk.en
